Biography
After dropping out of medical school for having spent too much time at La Cinémathèque Française, Denis Lenoir decided to make a profession out of his passion and enrolled in l'École Vaugirard in Paris. He also studied art history at l'École du Louvre. After his studies, he became an assistant for French cinematographers such as Bernard Lutic and Ricardo Aronovich. At age 27, Lenoir decided to become a lighting cameraman. His credits include 40 feature films, as well as a few TV pilots and films for TV, commercials and music videos.
Lenoir co-founded L'Association Française des Directeurs de la Photographie Cinématographique, l'AFC. He is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers. In 2006 he was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He was granted an ASC award for the mini-series Uprising in 2001 and the Camerimage Film Festival Bronze Frog Award for Demonlover in 2002. Lenoir has been invited to the Australian Film School in Sydney to conduct cinematography workshops. He has also conducted workshops for the American Film Institute.
Denis Lenoir is also a recognized still photographer and the author of a book on film director John Cassavetes. His more recent credits include Carlos by Olivier Assayas and La Belle Endormie by Catherine Breillat.
