A photographic experience against skin cancer As multifaceted organ, our skin presents itself both as the first barrier with the external environment, and as the privileged witness of our internal health. Each physical or psychological experience that we undergo leaves a mark on our skin throughout life, without us being aware of it at the moment. Indeed, skin is capable of storing in its deep layers the marks of our past experiences: from our lifestyle to our working conditions, including the place where we live and our habits of exposure to the sun, of multiple parameters thus influence our physical envelope. However, premature aging of our skin makes us more vulnerable to external attacks, first and foremost skin cancer: the most common type of cancer in the USA and Australia, and among the top 5 types of cancer detected in France and UK. “Solar Visions” was designed as an artistic and scientific experience, where each participant reveals these invisible marks, embedded in the deep layers of their skin, to realize the actual photoaging of their skin. Using the UV photography technique, usually limited to the dermatologic laboratories, the portraits taken display sunspots, wrinkles, depigmentation, first signs of vitiligo or acne scars present between the dermis and the epidermis. Through a sophisticated lighting setup based on quartz bulbs, the portraits taken go beyond simple dermatological analysis images to envelop the participants in bright light, marking their gaze with a solar signature. Initiated on the inauguration of the “Seizing the sun” exhibition at Hangar Y, Paris, at the end of 2023, this project aims to better understand how our personal and professional environment impacts our appearance (and, ultimately, our health) through our skin. If the short-term goal of this project is to raise awareness of sun risks that can cause skin cancer, its long-term goal is to create a map of skin health according to place of life and socio-economic activity. “Solar Visions” has already seen more than 200 participants over the last year, during artistic exhibitions but also skin cancer prevention events targeting the general public and outdoor workers all over France country alongside associations and health professionals.
