Biographie
Dimitri Mellos was born in Athens, Greece, and currently lives in New York City. He studied philosophy and psychology. He is a largely self-taught photographer. As a child, he used to walk around with an old Kodak Instamatic camera (with no film loaded), pre-tending to be taking pictures. He rediscovered his passion for photography only many years later, this time around making sure there was film (or an SD card) in the cam-era. He works mainly on long-term, self-initiated projects. His work has been exhibited internationally and has garnered several prestigious awards and accolades, including being a Finalist for the Visura Grant and the Magnum Expression Award and a Juror’s Pick at the Lensculture Magnum Photography Awards. Even though very interested in the expressive possibilities of color, light, and shade, he aims to make photographs that are emotionally resonant and not just formally striking.
John Szarkowski said of Garry Winogrand that “his ambition was not to make good pic-tures, but through photography to know life”. This statement perfectly describes Dimitri’s photographic aspirations as well.
