The Salin de Gruissan was chosen to develop the first two stages of the Salinalgue project, carried by Biocar, a french biofuel branch of the Compagnie du Vent. The idea is to cultivate a microalga dubbed Dunaliella salina, on a large scale, on unexploited salt pans. The objective: to cultivate the Dunaliella salina, a micro algae called "miraculous seaweed", resistant, with bioenergetic virtues, which is characterized by the ability to protect itself from invasive species. It is an antioxidant, rich in beta-carotene reaching its bright orange color at the end of summer in the saline and is recognized for its high added value in cosmetics and dietetics. Its pigments not only provide a substitute for chemical dyes, but also open up the prospect of producing biogas and next-generation biofuel, with a beneficial effect: the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. In 2018, the Salin de Gruissan received the eco-label Value Natural Regional Natural Park, the first one in France. Photo taken above the island of Saint Martin - Gruissan, August 2018, with my drone, where a profile of salt and mud is emerging in the Saline naturally colored by the Dunaliella salina.
