A happy-go-lucky 75-year-old, Garo's teenage spirit is as bright as the street art that surrounds him. Unlike his twin brother, he was born with profound and multiple learning disabilities. One of Garo’s greatest passions in life is cleaning. He spends hours picking up litter and sweeps away the dust and debris from the streets of the Beirut neighbourhood where he lives. As I stood there watching this gentle man with his dustpan and brush, I was reminded that tasks we often take for granted are massive achievements — and sources of fulfillment — for some people. Attitudes in Lebanon towards disability acceptance are gradually changing, but we still have a long way to go. Talking openly can help break the stigmas and make amazing individuals like Garo feel part of the community. Let’s keep the conversation going.
