Biography
Bernard Plossu was born on February 26, 1945 in Vietnam, from where he returned by boat when he was less than a year old. He studied in Paris, spending his summers hiking in the mountains. As a teenager, he preferred to skip school and go to the Cinémathèque to “learn” about images. There, he discovered the classics and the films of the New Wave.
He began photography at an early age: in 1958, he traveled to the Sahara with his father, equipped with a Kodak Brownie Flash. In 1965 and 1966, he lived in Mexico, where he met Mayan Lacandon Indians... and beatniks. First stay in Big Sur. Between 1967 and 1985, Bernard Plossu traveled extensively, reporting from India, the Sahel, where he met Bororo Fulani nomads, Italy... He lives in the highlands of New Mexico, where his son Shane was born in 1978.
In 1979, he published his book “Le voyage mexicain”, with a text by Denis Roche. He married photographer Françoise Nunez in 1986, and they have two children: Joaquim and Manuela, who spent their early years in Andalusia.
He now lives in La Ciotat.
