Insomnia
[1] Artist Biography / KANG Shingyu is graduated from Seoul Institute of the Arts and majored film directing in South Korea. His film works acclaimed and selected from all over 100 festivals in the world. Not film works, but his photo works are got named many exhibition and awards in the world. He is currently active various art area including film, media-art, photo and visual arts. As a photographer, KANG is skillfully composed nature, human and object. He believes art could change the world. Hence, he created photograph with insomnia theme. His insomnia works made in South Korea and all over the world. He made about 600 insomnia photos past seven years. He is keeping to make insomnia photos. [2] Artist Statement / There are moments that faced insomniac night. People are faced insomniac night with various things such as hopeless, failure, pain of crush, separated with family, betrayal and more. We are typically faced insomniac night with these reasons. Also, these are distinguishably define as abstract concept. I, as a photographer, hope Humans are remind and realized their boundary of unconscious. [3] Series intention / I honestly did not get people who they struggle with insomniac night. I fell in sleep with no issues in past, however, insomniac night came up to me after I had struggle moment in my life. It feels like a struggling fish with fishhook, I could not get out of this feeling. After this happened to me, I understood people who came to me spoke about their painful nights with insomnia. While I had this painful moment in past, I wrote a feature script about a photographer who is struggle with insomnia. After I wrote, find out this project not ready to make real. “Why not this character becomes me, so I can use this photo for my future film?” Therefore, I decided to became a actual photographer from my feature script. I made more photos than my original script eventually. It was a long and winding road. I wandered around looking for so many places, and I was able to find the right way by working with the people. I'll never forget all the people I've worked with and all those places. Thank you to everyone who is always been with me.
