Strasbourg
It's one of those key moments of the year that reminds us that Christmas is just around the corner, just as (if not more) than the start of the illuminations on the Champs Elysées: this Friday 24 November, Strasbourg's Christmas market will open its doors until 24 December. This emblematic "Christkindelsmärik" (market of the Christ child, in Alsatian) is one of the oldest Christmas markets in France. For a month, the town prepares to welcome visitors, some of whom come from far and wide to discover local specialities, not forgetting the unmissable large Christmas tree in Place Kleber, but also a new feature this year: a large 10-metre high 'cathedral tree' in Place de la Gare, to dazzle passers-by as soon as they get off the train. Made up of 77 small cathedrals of different sizes and colours, it will be a reference to the architecture of the famous cathedral in Strasbourg, the city at the heart of Europe to which our album of the week pays tribute.
